There is no question that when Apple introduced the iPod in 2001, they turned the mp3 world on its ear. The iPod soon set itself apart as the definition of “cool” among mp3 users, and the introduction of each new generation of iPod has only added luster to its legend.

Where there’s success, there are sure to be imitators, and the Apple iPod has spawned not only a plethora of competing mp3 players; it has spawned a wealth–at least for their makers–of iPod accessories to compete with the authentic iPod accessories introduced by Apple. And what the imitators lack in authenticity, they attempt to compensate for with a variety of other advantages.

Imitation iPod accessories will cost consumers less that the real thing; their manufacturers are doing an end-run around the fees associated with using the Apple iPod brand name, and have also spared themselves the expenses of actually doing research and development on original accessories.
